Part of the Diamond Pet Foods Recall, Diamond manufactures Taste of the Wild.  I have heard that Taste of the Wild is searching for a new Manufacturer for their foods, which might help them because I know a lot of people (myself included) who will no longer be using any foods manufactured by Diamond.

From the Taste of the Wild website...

Diamond Pet Foods, manufacturer of Taste of the Wild Pet Food, has issued a voluntary recall of limited batches of their dry pet food formulas manufactured between December 9, 2011, and April 7, 2012 due to Salmonella concerns. CDC Links Diamond Pet Foods to Samonella Outbreak

Read more about the Diamond Pet Foods recall HERE.

From the CDC Website "Multiple brands of dry pet food produced by Diamond Pet Foods at a single manufacturing facility in South Carolina have been linked to some of the human Salmonella infections. People who think they might have become ill after contact with dry pet food or with an animal that has eaten dry pet food should consult their health care providers.
A total of 14 individuals infected with the outbreak strain of SalmonellaInfantis have been reported from 9 states. The number of ill persons identified in each state is as follows: Alabama (1), Connecticut (1), Michigan (1), Missouri (3), North Carolina (3), New Jersey (1), Ohio (2), Pennsylvania (1), and Virginia (1)."
Diamond Pet Foods is no longer responding to inquiries and refuses to comment further on the matter.  Evidenced further by their latest press release "We are working with the CDC, but due to patient confidentiality, we cannot comment further."
The human illnesses that can be linked to the pet foods can be linked back to October 2011, if they started this long ago, why did they wait so long to stop production from every food being made in that plant?  The recall did not occur until April 6, 2012 and that was just for the Diamond Lamb & Rice Pet Food.  The Chicken Soup Pet Lover’s Soul Adult Light Formula dry dog food was recalled April 26, 2012.  On April 30, 2012, Diamond Puppy was recalled and on May 4, 2012 they finally recalled Chicken Soup for the Pet Lover’s Soul, Country Value, Diamond, Diamond Naturals, Premium Edge, Professional, 4Health, and Taste of the Wild.
I don't understand how Diamond let it get this far and how it took them so long to take action.  They state that they put their food through 151 tests.  How is Salmonella not one of those tests?  I had my dogs on Taste of the Wild 3 months ago, I used the bag and switched over to Acana to see if it would help the one with allergies.  I could have gotten sick because of this, my dogs could have gotten sick, albeit, very unlikely that they would.

Note: it is unlikely that a healthy dog would become sick by having Salmonella in pet food, however, it would be a problem for puppies or those dogs with a compromised immune system. It becomes a problem for people when they touch the food and do not wash their hands after feeding their pet.
On another note, I store my dogs food in a vittles vault because it is airtight and keeps the bugs out, I don't generally keep the bags, I wash out the container in between bags and pour the new bag in and toss the bag.  I have just recently started cutting out the production numbers and UPC codes and taping them to the top of the container.  I urge all of you to do the same if you don't keep the bag.  If you do this it will allow you to check production numbers in case of a recall like this.  I might start keeping all of my production numbers and UPC's in a binder that way I can keep track of what they are eating, since most of the bags in this recall would have been used months ago.
In the end all I have to say is, shame on you Diamond Foods for letting it get to this.

Diamond Pet Foods today announced that it is expanding a voluntary recall to include batches of nine brands of dry pet food formulas manufactured between December 9, 2011 and April 7, 2012 due to potential Salmonella contamination.
In April 2012, Diamond Pet Foods initiated three voluntary recalls of Diamond manufactured dry dog food. Although none of the additional products being recalled have tested positive for Salmonella, the company is pulling them from store shelves as a precaution. Diamond Pet Foods is coordinating efforts with federal and state health and regulatory agencies and decided to independently expand the recall to ensure the safety and well-being of customers and their pets.
The company stated: “We have taken corrective actions at our Gaston, S.C., facility and voluntarily expanded the recall out of concern for our customers and their pets.”

To determine if their pet food is recalled, consumers should check the production codes on the back of bags that have a number “2” or a “3” in the 9th or 10th digit and an “X” in the 11th digit. The best-before dates for the recalled brands listed above are December 9, 2012 through April 7, 2013.

To determine if their pet food is recalled, consumers should check the production codes on the back of bags must have both a number “3” in the 10th digit and an “X” in the 11th digit. The best-before dates for the recalled brands listed are December 9, 2012 through January 31, 2013.
The following illustrates how to read the production code and best-before date:

Diamond Pet Foods apologizes for any issues this may cause consumers and their pets. Pet owners who are unsure if the product they purchased is included in the recall, or who would like replacement product or a refund, may contact Diamond Pet Foods via a toll free call at 1-866-918-8756, Monday through Sunday, 8 a.m. – 6 p.m. EST.  Consumers may also go to a special website, www.diamondpetrecall.com, for more information. The company is working with distributors and retailers to ensure all affected product is removed from shelves.
Pets with Salmonella infections may have decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. If left untreated, pets may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever and vomiting. Infected but otherwise healthy pets can be carriers and infect other animals or humans. If your pet has consumed the recalled product and has these symptoms, please contact your veterinarian.
Individuals handling dry pet food can become infected with Salmonella, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with surfaces exposed to this product. People who believe they may have been exposed toSalmonella should monitor themselves for some or all of the following symptoms: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever. According to the Centers for Disease Control, people who are more likely to be affected by Salmonella include infants, children younger than 5 years old, organ transplant patients, people with HIV/AIDS and people receiving treatment for cancer. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) have received a limited number of reports of salmonellosis, the illness caused by Salmonella. We are working with the CDC, but due to patient confidentiality, we cannot comment further.

Natures Variety Instinct Canned Pet Food Coupons!

Nature's Variety has been nice enough to send out some new coupons for their Instinct line canned food.  NOTE: Mine came up with the print dialog box, unlike other coupons, so you can print more than 1, you just can't use them at the same time.  Suggestions: have others go in with you and make separate purchases, go back to the store to purchase, or hit up multiple stores.

What sets the Natures Variety Instict Line apart from their other lines and other foods is not only are they grain free, but they are also gluten free for those dogs that have allergies.  I know my rottweiler mix boy does wonderful on the instinct line.  So if your dog has allergies to foods, I would recommend trying this food out. Kong Dog Toys Review

Kong Dog Products

First up is the Kong Classic
Now, I know that the toy seems simple and not very exciting for dogs but you can do so much with this one toy and it will provide your dog with mental stimulation and keep them busy for quite a while depending on what you do with it.  They may be a bit pricey in the big box stores, but you can get the large size on Amazon for around $8.50.  Not a bad investment for something that is practically indestructible.

I have a rottweiler mix and a lab mix, so they are definitely big chewers and can destroy pretty much any toy out there.  They have yet to tear one of these apart.  One of my favorite things to do with this is to put some peanut butter in a glass measuring cup and put it in the microwave a few seconds until it is a bit thinner and easy to pour. Then I put some kibble or treats in the kong and then pour the peanut butter over the kibble.  I usually place the kong in a plastic bag, with the larger hole up then put it in the freezer for a few hours and then I give it to the pups.  It keeps them busy for quite a while.

Another suggestion: Tuna, Peanut Butter, Coconut Oil, Cottage Cheese **Freeze**

Kong Wobbler
The kong wobbler is relatively new, it sells for about $20 in Petco or Petsmart, but you can get it on Amazon for about $14.  I have the large one and you can put a cup of food in it at a time, so mine only can get half of their dinner at a time in it, the other half goes in the bowl.  It takes them a good 10 minutes to get it all out and provides them with mental stimulation to keep them happy and more manageable and helps relieve boredom.

Kong Genius Leo
I only have the Kong Genius Leo, I haven't gotten the others, I wanted to see if mine could figure out one genius toy and enjoy it before adding more to it.  They do enjoy it, I put treats in it sometimes kibble, but the kibble is too easy for them to get out since the pieces are small.  They do enjoy playing with it so I will probably add more.

I think all of these of toys are a great investment for both you and your dogs and will help provide environmental enrichment which has many benefits for both you and your dog.  You can read about it more HERE.
