RECALL - Natura expands recall again

Natura Pet is expanding their previous recall to include ALL Innova, California Natural, EVO, Healthwise, Mother Nature and Karma branded dry pet food and biscuit/bar/treat products that have expiration dates on or before June 10, 2014.

They are voluntarily recalling their dry pet foods and treats because they have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella.

Note: it is unlikely that a healthy dog would become sick by having Salmonella in pet food, however, it would be a problem for puppies or those dogs with a compromised immune system. It becomes a problem for people when they touch the food and do not wash their hands after feeding their pet.

Also, if you store your pet's food in a container, please take the food out if affected and wash it out with a bleach water solution to kill any bacteria that may be in the container.  I highly suggest cleaning out the container between every bag of food during normal use.

Pets with Salmonella infections may have decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. If left untreated, pets may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever and vomiting. Infected but otherwise healthy pets can be carriers and infect other animals or humans. If your pet has consumed the recalled product and has these symptoms, please contact your veterinarian.

IMPORTANT: Signs of Salmonella in People

Healthy people infected with Salmonella should monitor themselves for some or all of the following symptoms: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever. Rarely, Salmonella can result in more serious ailments, including arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation, and urinary tract symptoms. Consumers exhibiting these signs after having contact with this product should contact their healthcare providers.

Natura Pet Expands Voluntary RECALL

Breeder's Choice RECALL - Active Care Biscuits Healthy Joint Dog Treats

Breeder’s Choice, a Central Garden & Pet company, has issued a voluntary recall for a single batch of Active Care Biscuits-Healthy Dog Treats due to mold discovered in one of the lots of dog biscuits.

The following product is included in the recall:

• Size: 24 oz.
• Product Name: Active Care Biscuits-Healthy Dog Treats
• Best Before Code: 19/Dec/2013

Product and product lots that do not appear above have not been affected.

According to a release from the manufacturer, the mold seems to have occurred due to varying dryer temperature settings for drying biscuits. This exposed the recalled product to excess moisture and has since been remedied.

Pet owners who fed their pets the recalled biscuits should watch for symptoms that may develop. Common symptoms associated with mold exposure include gastrointestinal issues such as loose stool. At the time of this release, there have been no reports of human or pet illnesses associated with this recall.

Another Pet Food Recall - Natura Pet - Evo, Innova, California Natural, Healthwise

Natura Pet Foods has issued a recall on some of its foods due to Salmonella.  Read their letter to consumers here.  If you want to see the list of affected products then please go here.  This recall currently affects: Evo, Innova, California Natural, and Healthwise.  The Evo and Innova lines include some cat food products that were recalled.  Evo ferret food Turkey and Chicken formula formula is also recalled.

Peanut Butter RECALL!!!!

I use peanut butter to stuff in the dogs Kong toys and for myself of course... thankfully none of ours is on the list... but please check your Peanut Butter to be sure.


For Immediate Release-Portales, NM (September 24, 2012)  – Sunland,
Inc. today announced a  voluntary recall of its Almond Butter and Peanut Butter, which it has
now expanded to include its Cashew Butter, Tahini and Roasted Blanched Peanut Products.  This
recall is limited to products manufactured between May 1, 2012 and September 24, 2012.  These
products may be contaminated with  Salmonella, an organism that can cause serious and
sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and those with weakened
immune systems.  Healthy persons infected with  Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea
(which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.  In rare circumstances, infection
with  Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more
severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.
The voluntary recall was initiated after learning that between June 11, 2012 and September 2,
2012, twenty-nine people reported  Salmonella Bredeney PFGE matching  illnesses in
approximately 18 states, including Washington, California, Arizona, Texas, Louisiana, Missouri,
Illinois, Minnesota, Michigan,  Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, New York, Rhode Island, North
Carolina,  Virginia, Connecticut, New Jersey  and Maryland, according to a report issued on
September 22, 2012 by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

"There is nothing more important to us than the health and safety of our customers, particularly
the many families who enjoy our peanut butter everyday.  While FDA, CDC, and State Health
Agencies investigate to confirm the cause of illnesses reported, as a precautionary step, we have
decided to voluntarily recall our  Almond Peanut and Cashew Butters, Tahini and Roasted
Blanched Peanut products manufactured between May 1, 2012 and September 24, 2012.  If you
purchased these products, do not eat them.  Please return the product to your supermarket for a
full refund or dispose of it."

The recall is being conducted in cooperation with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration
(FDA).  No other Sunland products are affected by this recall.

Breeder’s Choice Pet Food of Irwindale, CA has announced a voluntary dog food recall involving one of its products due to possible contamination with Salmonella bacteria.

RECALL ALERT: Petco Issues Recall on Stainless Steel Dog Bowls

As of 8/16/2012 - Petco has not even mentioned this on their facebook page or their twitter account to try and get the word out about it.  It is on their webpage, but it is NOT noticeable because I even missed it and I was looking for it!  I'm disappointed in Petco not putting this out there more, I mean, possible radiation is kind of a big deal.

Also, I'm really glad my dogs are eating out of plastic bowls right now and have never eaten out of Stainless steel bowls, and not only that, but they didn't come from Petco.

One of Petco’s suppliers mistakenly used Cobalt-60, a radioactive material, in the production of the recalled bowls. Due to the presence of this material, the bowls are shown to emit low levels of radiation.

Stainless Steel Bowl Notice

Petco has determined that one of its foreign suppliers used stainless steel mistakenly containing small quantities of Cobalt-60 when fabricating certain orders of certain SKUs/models of stainless steel pet food bowls. Cobalt-60 is a radioactive material commonly used in industrial gauging equipment and other uses.

We don’t know for certain how it got into our product, but we believe it came from scrap metal that had some Cobalt-60 accidentally mixed in. The affected products were found to emit low levels of radiation.

The Cobalt-60 levels in the affected products are far below State and Federal regulatory limits. All of the expert testing conducted on these products to date indicates that there is no health risk to the public, to our associates or to pets.

To our knowledge, the affected products were limited to two cargo containers that entered the United States in late May and early June. We’ve also determined that the affected products pose no health risk, and were and are safe to be handled by our associates.

The issue was discovered by Customs and Border Protection agents during a routine import screening of one of the containers. That container was held at the port and never reached Petco. The second container had previously cleared Customs and reached Petco’s distribution network.

Upon learning of this issue following the delivery of the affected products to our distribution centers, we promptly retained experts to examine the potentially affected products, and those experts determined that the SKUs examined were safe for handling.

Out of concern that products from the second container reached our stores, we removed from our store shelves and from our website all products from the supplier that produced the bowls.

We have confirmed that the vast majority of all of the affected products remain at Petco distribution centers, are quarantined outside and never reached our stores.

We also confirmed that very few affected items were actually sold to consumers. We are working to contact those customers to inform them of the situation and to retrieve those particular bowls.

Petco has notified the Nuclear Regulatory Commission and a number of state governments, and is in the process of notifying other appropriate states as we continue to collect and verify information.

The Illinois state government did its own testing and issued a news release stating that “a person would have to hold one of the bowls against their chest for roughly six and a half days to receive a dose of radiation equivalent to a single chest X-ray,” and that “these bowls do not pose an immediate health risk.”

Petco tested other stainless steel pet products it carries from other suppliers and found no similar issues. The supplier that produced the affected products has told us that it has already instituted special screening procedures. We are in the process of reviewing those procedures ourselves, and we have put a hold on future shipments until this issue is resolved.

Customers who purchased these products between the dates of May 31 and June 20, 2012, should bring it to their local Petco store for a full refund. If you have any questions, please call Petco Customer Service at 877-738-6742.
